Building Community

Document Actions
By working together, British Columbians can regain control of our lands, our economy, and our future.

It won’t be easy. Communities are increasingly excluded from forestry and energy decisions in the race to implement corporate self-management.

But change is happening. We build grass-roots coalitions and help them create leverage to achieve their goals. Our approach works. We have succeeded in stopping the privatization of public lands and clawing back forest tenure for communities and First Nations.

And on energy development, in places like the Kootenays, the northwest, the Peace Region, and Hat Creek, Dogwood Initiative is working with community leaders to create leverage and catalyze unified action in response to pressure to develop coalbed methane.

We have succeeded in uniting communities to speak with one voice and have identified solutions for implementing local control.

"I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter. I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb...I can rest only a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended." - Nelson Mandela
