Privatization - Lands
A short list of some the lands & resources the government has been privatizing since 2001:
- the grant to Weyerhaeuser and other companies of tens of thousands of
hectares of land within their forest licences
- plans to sell large tracts of land to forest companies if the government wins a second term (spring 2005)
- removal of restrictions on the transfer of forestry tenures from one
company to another
- deregulation of forestry planning and review, offloading decisions and
consultation to companies
- offloading land use research to the companies applying to use the land
(e.g. Land and Water BC having applicants for land and water tenures
conduct their own research into effects on wildlife and health)
- cuts in royalty regimes, especially for coalbed methane development,
which subsidize the industry, as well as continued subsidies to the forest
industry, which hasten the exploitation of the environment.
- increased land sales targets for Land & Water BC (almost double in 2004-05 what they were in 2001-2002)
