20% Reallocation
In March 2003, Dogwood Initiative and its partners succeeded in getting approximately 20% of all major logging tenures reallocated to small operators, communities and First Nations.
This reallocation to local and indigenous groups is the largest in British Columbia—perhaps even in North American—history.
The Vancouver Sun—and virtually all other Canadian media—has characterized the changes as representing the “most significant forest policy steps in 50 years.”
As a result of our collaborative efforts, more than 3 million cubic metres of wood (almost a 600% increase) will be reallocated to First Nations, and small communities will get control of an estimated million cubic metres (275% increase) as well.
This is crucial because the economic and environmental future of British Columbia depends on who controls our precious public lands and resources.
We believe that more re-allocations will soon follow as a result our our programs.
