Alberta oil spill cleaned up

A pipeline rupture that sent thousands of litres of crude oil flowing into the Lesser Slave River on Wednesday has been cleaned up quickly, Alberta's petroleum regulator reports.

Environmental crews have nearly finished cleanup efforts, with no reports of wildlife disturbed at the small northern Alberta river, Davis Sheremata, spokesman for the Energy Resources Conservation Board, said Thursday.

Around 19,000 litres of crude oil leaked from the pipeline leased to Penn West Energy, he said. The spill is about 200 kilometres north of Edmonton.

Although the spill was contained quickly, there are lasting effects on the environment, said Lindsay Telfer, of the Sierra Club, adding "these kinds of accidents are happening more and more. . . . At what point are we going to say we don't want to build more pipelines?"
