bc4sale.org — helping you stop privatization Original story: The perils of privatization have long been at the core of Dogwood Initiative’s work. ... The [bc4sale.org] site helps you become an activist, in ways small and large. Update: The BC4Sale project relies on the ideas and creativity of people across BC. The site is just growing, but already people like you have sent us a lot of information about services and assets that have been sold off, plus humorous satire like the "NOT4Sale" signs. We have more humour and spoofs on the way, and will announce those on our site. The key to the project's success is distribution, so please send your friends to the site and encourage them to send us their ideas. The "Privatization BC" part of the site should be online by early next week: we have just been taming the research we've gathered into something digestible on a web page. |
How bad forest policies hurt communities like Port Alice Original story: Over the last few months British Columbians have been inundated by slick television commercials combining beautiful scenery with happy faces espousing platitudes about BC's investment climate, job growth, and recreational potential...more Update: In our recent update on this story, we note that, although charges have been recommended against some of the company officials who robbed the town of its economic engine, that doesn't help this community, or others the government has abandoned with its new hands-off forestry policies. This is an example of government abdicating its duty to communities. We are continuing to watch the Port Alice story, and will make it the subject of continuing bulletins. |

Original story:Coal-mining, coal-fired generation and coalbed methane development are intensifying at an alarming rate in BC. These are potentially hot provincial election issues...more Update: This article is increasingly timely, as nomination meetings are held by all the parties. As the election race gets under way, we are hoping the issue of coal will be raised by people across BC. Coal features prominently in the current government's plans for the future of energy in BC. We need to hear from all parties what their position is on coal mining, coalbed methane, and coal-fired power. For another bulletin on the politics of energy, read our story on dirty pipeline politics. |
Haida 3 - what you can expect from government Original story: It has been almost a month since the judgement of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Haida and Taku cases...more Update: As Will Horter notes in a recent bulletin about Brascan's proposal to buy Weyerhaeuser's coastal forestry operations, there is still little sign within government that any change is under way. The Ministry of Forests is hiding behind its new laissez-faire laws, and no one wants to admit consultation is required. The result is only going to be more court challenges, and further precedents that empower First Nations' ability to demand change in resource decision-making. |
Kemess North: First Nations, fish and government process Original story: Northgate Minerals' proposal to use Duncan Lake to dispose of tailings and acid drainage from its Kemess North mine expansion is getting a lot of attention...more Update: This story is proving to be another example of the way communities in BC can join together and mount strong opposition to destructive projects. Dogwood Initiative is actively working with a local group of community, Aboriginal and environmental leaders to oppose the Kemess North mine. We'll keep readers posted as opposition mounts. |
